The Year's Best-Selling Games (cont'd)
Number 8. Sim City 3000
Units sold: 242,435
Gross income: $7,992,300
Will Wright is the Steven Spielberg of gaming. He does great
mainstream stuff that routinely breaks sales records and then
someone else runs it into the ground with dippy sequels. Sim
City 3000 is tired and clunky, the sort of thing that people
who don't know any better will buy in droves. It's clearly
the product a development process that went on too long and
suffered a few too many refits. We prefer Sim City 2000's
crisp engine and cleaner gameplay, but the series must go
on.
Number 7. Sim Theme Park
Units sold: 309,516
Gross income: $8,514,816
Ooh...ahh...whee! It was the year of amusement park games.
What Sim Theme Park (also known as Theme Park World until
EA saw the sales figures for Will Wright's various Sim games)
has on Rollercoaster Tycoon is 3D graphics that allows you
to walk around the park and and actually go on the rides.
What Rollercoaster Tycoon has on Sim Theme Park is more detailed
and interesting gameplay. We wonder how many people purchased
this game simply because they were hoping for a 3D Rollercoaster
Tycoon?
