Disney Infinity becomes the most ironic name ever

, | News

It’s only been a couple of months since Disney announced their intent to cease direct videogame creation outside of browser and mobile games, but they’ve already laid out the schedule for Disney Infinity’s slow death. In a post on the official page, The Walt Disney Company has detailed exactly how all your toy DLC purchases will become obsolete. Effective immediately, the PC Steam, Android, iOS, and Amazon versions of the Disney Infinity are disconnected from the in-game store. On September 30th, these versions will be shut out completely and all online features will be dead. Console versions of Disney Infinity will continue to operate as normal until March 3rd, 2017. On that final date, all the servers for the game will be turned off and it will only be playable as an offline experience.

The good news for collectors is that the figures are being sold off with steep discounts by many retailers. Get that Yondu figure while you can.

A moment of silence please for Disney Infinity

The Walt Disney Company is ending Disney Infinity. During an investor relations update for the second quarter of 2016, Disney slipped this terse note into the statement ending the toy-to-video game franchise.

Items affecting comparability during the quarter ended April 2, 2016 included a $147 million charge in connection with the discontinuation of our self-published console games business, principally Infinity

Utah-based Avalanche Software (not the Avalanche Studios that created Just Cause) will also be shut down as a result of Disney’s decision to leave behind self-published games. Infinity manager John Blackburn thanked the fans for their support and assured them that three new characters from Alice Through the Looking Glass and a Finding Dory Play Set will still be released as planned.

Disney Infinity 3.0 was released on August 30th, 2015. You can check out Tom’s review of the game here.

Disney Infinity 2.0 Edition assembles the Marvel heroes

Marvel’s costumed heroes will be coming to Disney Infinity 2.0 Edition. Disney Interactive released a teaser trailer showing Captain America’s iconic shield flying past current Disney Infinity characters such as Sully and Captain Jack Sparrow. Unfortunately, the short video doesn’t clarify what the 2.0 Edition actually involves. Is it just new figures and a software update to the game, or is it an all-new retail game requiring the purchase of a new figure stand as well?

The Wall Street Journal had reported that Marvel’s superheroes would be integrated to the collectible action figure videogame, but details were scant.

Disney Infinity lets Captain Jack Sparrow stumble through Columbia

, | News

Bioshock Infinite’s floating city of Columbia will be coming to Disney Infinity. Five pieces of user-generated content picked by developer Avalanche Software will be released as free DLC for the game’s toy box mode. The add-ons include the floating islands of Columbia, a Tron trench run, and a level based on Disneyland’s jungle cruise.

The crossover makes perfect sense despite the wholesome all-ages nature of Disney Infinity and the violent conflict in Columbia. Disneyland and Bioshock Infinite were both influenced by the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, otherwise known as The World’s Columbian Exposition.
