Myth 3: The Wolf Age is a prequel and takes place 1000 years before Myth. It will be developed by Mumbo Jumbo. Here's the description from the calendar (via Blues):

"It takes place 1000 years before the start of Myth: The Fallen Lords and follows the life of Connacht - the legendary hero who saved humanity from the insidious Myrkindia and the oppressive Trow, eventually becoming the emperor of all human lands. Myth III explores the daunting past before the Great War and the destructive clashes between the races.

"In 1421 AE, the world is in sheer chaos. The nightmare, Myrkindia, runs rampant over the lands. The Trow enslave the Ogre to build titanic temples to their god. A new Leveler, claiming to be Moagim reborn, has just risen and swears to smash the empire of Cath Bruig. Most of humanity has been scattered for hundreds of years, existing in war tribes who hide in fear of the evil creatures who stalk the night. Myth III: The Wolf Age will live up to even the most critical Myth fan's expectations, yet is immediately engaging and easy-to-learn for the first time strategy player."

Age of Wonders 2: The Wizard's Throne is also mentioned in the calendar. According to Blues, it will use a "top of the line Direct 3D graphics engine". It's being developed by Triumph Studios who made the original and should be out in early 2002.

Cool or cool? What do you think?

The fact that AoW2 will use a 3D engine is the last thing I want to hear, and the last element of the game design that Triumph needs to address. Gameplay, gameplay, gameplay! Was anything *substantial* said about it in the calendar?

We aren't big enough to get calendars sent to us by game publishers, so we don't know for sure. But we're going to start a protest movement against all the puff pieces you see in calendars these days. We want information, dammit, hard data! Too many calendars these days are just fluff.

Well, "D3D engine" is hard data. It's just not the hard data that interests me about AoW. :-)

I must say that I am glad to see both Myth and AoW getting sequels. Hope springs eternal (perhaps even in the face of expected quality given circumstantial evidence).

Well, the fact that they spell "Myrkridia"
incorrectly makes me a bit worried.
I don't believe they can live up to the quality of
the first two. It is very doubtful if a new team
can inject the same kind of love that Bungie did
for Myth.
Not to mention the fact that making a game of
"Game of the Year nominee" quality is bloody
difficult.

I agree with Anders that it will be hard to live up to Bungie's work, but it's nice that someone's attempting to continue the series. I just wonder if they're reusing the Myth 2 engine?

About AOW2, I don't really mind the 3D engine. It could be cool. One thing about AOW was that if you played a high resolution those tactical battle units were teensy-tiny. I would have enjoyed zooming in a bit.

So many questions and so few calendars at hand....

I have a good feeling about Age of Wonders 2. The original game played well. If the look was a little fragmented (beautiful maps but primitive unit/battlefield graphics) I think that might have been partially due to the very long development time of the game. I stopped by the Valley of Wonders site a few times after I bought the game, and was impressed at the level of visibility the developers had there. If they were really paying attention to what looked like a pretty well-developed community of AOW players there, then i think they will make a really good game.

Yeah, Triumph and Raymond Bingham both supported the game quite well after it was released. I'm glad they're going for a sequel. If they do a good job they will have a nice community of players. Still, it's hard to imagine a game like this being a big commerical success.
