Looks like Master of Orion 3 will be out before Galactic Civilizations, so Stardock has their work cut out.

I don't know about that.

Am I the only one that looks at the coverage of Master of Orion 3 and all the bluster by the developers and thinks "No way this game comes out for another two years at least." The design is so huge and the art assets must be massive for this kind of undertaking. Real-time combat too! I just can't see it ever being the sum of its many disparate parts. I'd like to be proven wrong, but given Quicksilver's track record (Trumpeting Invictus?!), and the early stuff they've shown, I really don't see it.

Gal Civ on the other hand, while it will likely contain all the quirks we know and love from Stardock's excellently playing games which can be saddled with unintuitive interfaces, seems like a more likely candidate for success. The OS/2 version was a huge game (for OS/2) and still talked about with reverence by those that played it. Not only that, the game is strictly turn-based and will definitely have stellar AI given their track record.

I just feel like Master of Orion 3 is the game that shouldn't be made. The second one proved that building a good AI for the huge amount of varaiation in play styles is extremely difficult. Add that turn based global AI to a real-time combat one and it gets way out of hand. If the game is released before 2003, I think it'll either be a bug fest (like Quicksilver's other games) or just won't be the game they've been promising.

No. You are not alone. I recognize the promises and wish them well, but I don't have any confidence that they will be able to deliver.

Without naming names, I don't think they understand the size of some of the boasts they are making.

It would not shock me at all if Brad beats them to market.

I don't think the combat's going to be a huge portion of the game. They had it working at E3, also. For the most part the combat's going to be a lot of AI vs. AI stuff, although the player can spend an "imperial focus" point and control the combat. I think MOO players probably won't like it, but it should work ok.
