Akira article in Slate

A good read, and one I agree with (re: the flaws). I already pre-ordered my DVD. Along with the new Godfather set and, sigh, the Phantom Menace. What a pre-odering day I had!
I understand why new audiences come away from Akira unimpressed. But it floored me in 1989. I hadn't seen anything like it. The music still follows me in some ways, and that's why I want the DVD.
This is also a fine and interesting article at Slate: http://slate.msn.com/culturebox/entries/01-07-20_112241.asp
And not just for the title, which is brilliant.

The Phantom Menace? On DVD? Really?
I must say, it's about time that Lucas joined the 21st century!
Please, elaborate...Where did you pre-order this, and any sign of the trilogy?

No sign of the trilogy.
But the TMP DVD is due in the Fall.
Available for pre-order at Amazon.com with loads of promised extras I probably won't ever watch.
I'm not, admittedly, a huge TMP fan, but I'm buying the DVD because, well, it is still Star Wars....

Hey, thanks for the link. That's exciting news...
I just love anything Star Wars. And, actually, I thought TPM was really good. (I know, I'm in a very small minority around here...No need to remind me!) Naturally, this is a must-have.
