Nice piece on Daniel Clowes (creator of Eightball) in the current New Yorker.

Haven't finished it yet, but it's pretty amazing to think that an artist as accomplished as Clowes manages to pull down $70k a year only after selling lots of original artwork. Generally he nets $15k an issue, after the two years it takes for them to sell out. Clowes is very down on the current alternertive scene.

The problem is that if you don't aim at the mass market, you don't get mass market sales. It's like writing poetry and wondering why Random House won't sign you to a six-figure deal.
