So, one of my buddies calls me from the hospital -- his ex-girlfriend is in labor, with his baby. (They're still on decent enough terms that she wanted him there, but they're not together now or anything. But it is his baby.) So, anyway, he's updating us on the status, giving all those details, she's getting close to delivery now, etc...

But the thing apparently forefront on his mind: "So..." he asks me, "are we getting together [for a LAN party] Saturday night?"

I don't wonder why they are no longer together.

Was he playing Advance Wars in the waiting room?

Hey cut him some slack, most jerks wouldn't have been there at the hospital at all. It's not like he's going home with her and the baby anyway... and he'll need something to do on the off-weekend.

Sorry, the guy has a new son or daughter, married or not it's his kid, and he's worried about playing games. Immature at best. Poor kid.

Bah Jeff, he was talking to Michael Murphey right? The guy he plays games with. What's he going to talk about?

The problem here isn't really that he asked about the LAN party. If I called my uncle Joe, inevitably we'd talk Packers. The problem is he called Michael from the delivery room at all... while "she's getting close to delivering..."

But all "how I'd react things aside" judgement stuff aside Jeff. One thing my wife has taught me (she's a nurse) is that people do and say the strangest things while in a delivery room. Doesn't indicate anything really, but how they handle/mishandle stress.

Anyway, seriously, kudos to him for being in the delivery room and being there at all. That indicates more maturity than lots of fathers.

To his defense, I think either the doctors or her asked him to leave when labor started getting intense. He called from the waiting room, and the main purpose of his phone call was to let us know how she was doing. It just cracked me and my wife up when he asked about Saturday night.

That being said, as of 12:05 last night (he called 'bout 9:45 last night) he's a proud daddy of a 7lb 12oz baby girl. We went and saw them tonight. She's a real doll.

He's not the most mature guy in the world, to be sure, but the baby's already changed him a lot -- for the better.

And yes, we're proud of him for spending almost the entirety of the last two days at the hospital with her. Good for him.

And, I'll also add, if it was up to him, they'd still be together, I think.
