I assume they are trying to build a buzz among the kids, but I can't think of any other reason to do this sort of thing.

All the console companies throw these stupid parties. It's hardly indicitive of Sony's situation. But Nintendo's had them, Sega's had them, Microsoft will have them, if they haven't already. The best part is the silly celebrity quotes you get about how nifty the games are.

When the dreamcast launched, they had a party in NYC and had some of Howard Stern's team attend. The next day they must have been paid to mention it on the show.
Sadly they all kept referring to it as a playstation. They went on and on about how great the playstation was etc. It was until the end of the bit that someone broke it to them that it was a dreamcast, not a playstation.
It was a moving endorsement.

They got what they deserve for trying to advertise through Howard Stern's crew. I was listening to the radio show once (it was an accident really!) and some prisoner was able to call them, and mentioned that he was in for 72 more months. Howard & crew all tried to figure out how many years that was. They came up with 3 different wrong answers.

You'd be surprised how many celbs actually do play a fair share of games. Most of the "hot" celebs in music, movies, TV, and sports these days are people who are in their 20s and low 30s and they grew up on Nintendo like the rest of us. And they've got a lot of disposable income.
Sports celbs (and non-celebs) are notorious gamers. Game systems are popular at training camps and on the road.
