Hey, folks...
Has anyone else experienced this
phenomenon? I've gotten two consecutive
issues of COMPUTER GAMES magazine in
the mail, followed by an issue of
ELECTRONIC GAMING MONTHLY over the
last few months. I never subscribed to either
magazine. Is this part of some promotional
deal that anyone's heard of, or did some credit
card cracker sign me up for these mags?
There was no explanation or promotional
material included with any of the three
magazines I've gotten.
Puzzling... I noticed an article by QUARTER TO
THREE contributor Tom Chick in one of the
issues of COMPUTER GAMES magazine. Are
you guys are part of this twisted conspiracy to
drive me insane with free gifts?
AAAAAAAAAAAHGGGH!

A lot of guys around here write for Computer Games Magazine. (Actually, that was, in large part, why I started subscribing to CGM, after I discovered this site. Tom and Mark both write there, as well as several others, and a lot of the editors of CGM hang out on this board regularly. You'll find some people from Computer Gaming World, here, too, but rarely do those PC Gamer snobs "grace us with their presence." :-) )
Don't have any clue about why you got issues you never subscribed to. If there's a promotion going on, I'm sure some of the guys around here would know about it.

My only theory about this, beyond the
possibility of malice or accident, was that
perhaps the fact that I had bought a bunch of
games from Chips and Bits had something to
do with this, as they advertise on the
Computer Games Magazine site. Otherwise,
I'm not sure where they would have gotten my
address.
Maybe one of those kids who steal from
Gord is messing with me, as well. Time to
break out the brass knuckles and crack some
twelve-year-old skulls...
By Michael Murphy (Murph) on Wednesday, October 10, 2001 - 02:13 am:
That's possible. Chips -n- Bits is owned by the same parent company as CGM. It wouldn't surprise if large orders there resulted in complimentary issues of CGM.
By Mark Asher on Wednesday, October 10, 2001 - 02:41 am:
Quimbies, you're not going insane. Your Chips and Bits order is probably why you're getting the mags. They all do funny things to try to boost their circulation numbers.

Ahhhh.... Okay, now I can sit back and enjoy all of this finely wrought writing about games by ye godlike Experts of Fun without worrying about my credit rating being quietly sabotaged behind the scenes by vengeful CGM staffers looking for their subscription money.
By the way, do you guys publish the "International Sluts With Nuts Quarterly" and "T-Girl Video Revue" magazines, as well? The only other folks I've given my address out to recently was the Killcreek Fan Club, and I'd hate to think... OH MY GOD!

I think you get a free 12-month subscription to Computer Games when you buy anything from Chips. If there's still two editions (one bonus, one not), you get the "not" one.

I got a number free issues to Computer Games from a number of failed magazines, including the infamous OGR Magazine fiasco and when The General folded. Think I got a free year or two off of C&B too. So I'm subscribed through 2004 or thereabouts. That was like two years ago too.

Hell, I don't get free copies of CGM and I used to work for them....
By Brad Grenz on Thursday, October 11, 2001 - 08:41 pm:
Yeah, I got 2 years out of the death of OGR.

Actually, Michael, I only recently found out this board even existed. (The same probably goes for the rest of the PCG guys if they've even found it yet.) So it's not that the PC Gamer crew is too snobbish to "grace you with our presence", we just haven't been invited into the clubhouse.

Well, welcome to our clubhouse!! Extend this invitation to your friends -- it's often been remarked around here that we wish we had more contact with you guys.
Mark, Tom, I'm extending your influence in the community. I want a commission -- fifteen percent of the profit you guys make off this site a month!! (No, I won't split losses...)

I believe Mr. Vederman has graced us with his presence from time to time so PC Gamer has not been completely absent.

That's true. But it's so rare...As opposed to all those CGM and CGW guys, who practically live here (not that there's anything wrong with that...)
