Okay, the newsgroupies are making me sick describing the perfection of this game. Is it true? Is it hype? Will my life have meaning even if I wait til September for the North American release?

Try the demo. It is a massive download, but it also was on the CGM disc in the last couple of months. There are a couple of threads around here where some of us were ranting about how good the demo is. You can also find replacement missions for the demo to try some new things. Fan missions for a demo? That should tell you something in and of itself.
I'll wait for the US release, as I still have a bad taste in my mouth from an import of Longbow, but the demo put the game firmly on my "must buy" list.

Codemasters is supposed to send me the UK release within the next week or so. The two betas that I've played are pretty fun, though.

Any chance of importing the OpFlash interface/graphics_engine/gameplay into WW2OL? ;-)

The demo will give you a good idea of the game... plus the demo is almost a full game in its own right with over 100 plus demo missions already available. the demo missions probably sold the game thru word of mouth, much more than a preview could have! I got it in the DnD issue of CGS+.
For me, after playing the demo, i couldnt wait an extra two months. but im an impatient freak! yeah, i think it deserves the attention. its a great game.

The Op. Flashpoint engine ain't *that* great :) Seriously though the photo-textures don't really work for me that much, plus there are quite a few wonky other things that just bother me. Well, they did -- I dunno how much the UK version has changed from the beta, they are 2-3 months apart.

Yeah the graphics didnt catch my eye when i fired up the demo, for the first time. But after awhile i really liked it... it just fits the game well. When you fly a copter or A-10 its surprising how well the engine holds up. I think its the sound fx that does it more for me osmetimes, makes the game more "realistic". You can tell distance sometimes by the whizz of bullets, type of gun, and all sorts of stuff.... yeah

OFP definitely isn't perfect but I think the whole package collectively is a real time wargamers dream. The fact that it comes with one of the most extensive and flexible scripting languages makes this game a must have for mission designers.

so, where do I download all these free missions for the demo?

www.operationflashpoint.com
Click on "Missions Database Updated" under "Feature". The mission "Phaeden1" is excellent.

also try the FUBAR III mission on that site... its a pretty good "open ended" mission. Has some good scripting in it.

I tried Ian Boys' "Castle Hill" scenario last night. An excellent mission where you land on the beach in two M113's and then proceed up a hill to capture an ancient castle.
