Well I upgraded. Took me a few hours yesterday to get everything up and working. Only problem was that shentech.com sent a GeForce2 MX card instead of the GeForce2 GTS card I ordered (and paid for). Honest mistake? Attempt to treat me like a punk? Who knows? I'm awaiting their response to my e-mail.
Spent a little more than what people were quoting here. Basically, system looks like this:
- AMD Athlon 1.3 processor
- ASUS K7V133 motherboard
- Maxtor 40 GB ATA 100 7200 rpm drive
- Philips CD-ROM Drive/Rewriter
- Creative Labs GeForce 2 GTS 32mb (after they send me the right one, that is)
- $57 Enlight case with 300W power supply
- Still using my old SB Live! card and 128mb of RAM, though I plan to order another 128mb of RAM before too long.
Total upgrade cost around $800.

I bought Clive Barker's Undying and Hostile Waters yesterday. Too tired to install both, so I just fiddled with Undying. That thing's creepy. I notice that head shots seem to actually matter in this game.

You are really going to appreciate Unreal engine games with more CPU power. UT, Rune, Deus Ex, Undying, etc. scale linearly as you increase the Mhz. With those games the CPU matters more than the video card assuming equal image quality between cards.

I've got an ISA SB Live! card, but I can't find a motherboard that will support a CPU that speed that also has any ISA slots that's within the price that I want to spend. (Not that I ask much...) So, I don't think I'm gonna be able to keep that card when I upgrade. It's gonna have to go into the PC that I build with my current motherboard...

It's not so much the card, as the $50 for the card on top of the $175 for the motherboard/CPU combo, on top of the $150 for the video card...It adds up pretty quick. And some of us have limited funds when it comes to spending on their PC! ;-)
It won't be too bad, though, since I will be putting old parts into another machine to have around.

BTW, you can get an Iwill KK266r board... i got one that had an ISA slot. I needed it since i have a rock solid 56k modem (yeah, I'm in the stone age) that i wanted to keep. Plus my experience with PCI modems was not so good, at least the winmodems... those suck!
anyway, the iwill board i got is pretty good...has stepping stuff that lets you overclock without messing with jumpers. i like it.
