QuarterToThree Message Boards: Free for all: Everquest sells 1 million copies?

I think today's 3 AM is right and that Sony is including the expansion packs in their 1 million copies sold number.

According to Sony, Everquest has retained 62% of the people who has subscribed to the game. Work that in with a total subscriber base of 330,000 and you have roughly 580,000 copies of the original game sold. Roughly half of those 580,000 copies came with the Kunark expansion as part of the package, so if the other 290,000 people bought Kunark that brings us up to 860,000 copies. Mix in the current sales of the Velious expansion and that takes you over the 1 million mark.

Soooo, Sony is kind of tooting the wrong horn here by way of their phrasing. It's more like 1 million copies of Everquest branded software instead of 1 million copies of Everquest.

Still, selling that many copies of the game and the expansion must be making every other game company drool. That's not even including the fact that every month they make an estimated profit of $3 - $4 per monthly subscriber.

It's no wonder everyone and their mother is trying to get into the MMOG market.

My mother indeed wants to open her own MMOG. She is going to call it "Jane Austen Online," and it will be a virtual recreation of the world of the Regency author. She plans to go beta this year, with a scheduled launch in Q1 2002.

Not :-).

Despite the fact that there doesn't seem to be any
company involved or any sort of previous
experience with gaming in this project, I'm
willing to invest 5 billion dollars in it.
Or I would have, if I had been an Eidos executive
two years ago.

Well, I assure you I have all the skills necessary to burn through millions of VC money each and every month, without fail, and without ever showing a nasty profit!

Go ahead, try me!

Might I suggest you grow your hair out and buy a Ferrari. Also, hiring the largest team possible is always a good idea, especially if they can't work together effectively.

I don't have any hair! :-( Too late for that. And I can't have a Ferrari in Vermont--the potholes and dirt roads would reduce it to scrap, and where would I get snow tires for it?

Didn't they have something like this in season 7 of Red Dwarf?
