This might be the online team game to get. . . though not until i get my cable modem next month will it get a lot of play from me...(dial up puts me at a severe disdvantage ya know!)

Also, Im glad they will have a little solo play...though every preview i read doesn't really mention how good the solo play is...yes i know its primarily multi, but I still play UT way more offline then online.

I think there is a good solo game to be made from the Tribes/Tribes 2 engine. The terrain and long range distances are nice looking in these games.

etc

I don't know... Tribes actually ended up being an annoying game for me because it was just a game of bunny-hop. People jump, fire, jump, fire, and look like complete idiots, but that's how you had to play the game. It's a blast playing UT now and watching someone try to shoot at me while they're jumping around like idiots... I end up just standing there casually charging my biosludge to full strength. I guess that's why I dispise the Morpheus maps in UT team deathmatch.

If Tribes 2 ends up just being another game like Tribes where the best strategy is to get a jet pack and bunny-hop across the terrain, I'll pass. I'm not one for realism in FPS games, but when the game disintegrates to the point where the only viable weapons are AE damage weapons pointed near a guys landing point and things that fire so fast that you can hose down a guys flight path, they get boring for me.

Jim, I made this same exact complaint in a thread a long time ago here on Q23. Allow me to put this succintly: combat with a jetpack SUCKS ASS. It eventually evolved into a ballet of timing your disc launcher to coincide with the other guy landing on the ground. Because hitting someone in the air is just about friggin' impossible-- so all the 'good' players learn to bounce around as much as possible.

My hope is that vehicles will be featured more prominently in games of this type and the jetpack de-emphasized.

And if you ever tried to fight someone in Duke Nukem 3D with a jetpack, you had the same problem. But as an added 'bonus' you could not look all the way up. Whatever game design genius decided to add the jetpack to DN3D should be immediately fired and hired by Ion Storm to work on Daikatana II: The Revenge.

Come on wumpus, stop mincing words and tell us what you really think.

I loved Tribes. I loved the jetpacks. Sure, it was hard hitting the hoppers, but on some of the maps the flag was in a base so it wasn't like you could continually hop. I loved the wide open spaces. I loved sniping. I loved the heavy artillery you got from the mortar. I had a great time with the game.

Mark's stream of consciousness rant was brought to us by the letter 'T' and the number '2'.

Hey Mark, did you ever get the beta copy of Tribes2 like you mentioned to me a while back?

I just went to the Tribes 2 site. This quote is right off their news page...

Quote:

Sierra and Dynamix are proud to announce that Tribes 2, eagerly awaited sequel to the 1999 Online Action/Strategy Game of the Year, has went gold!

I love that "has went gold."

The game isn't even on shelves yet and they're talking about all kinds of mods. Seems premature to me.

I'll definitely check out a demo when they release one.

I never got the beta to work right. It was probably my fault, but it never seemed to find live servers when it scanned for them and I experienced horrible clipping problems. It was beta, though, so I'm hopeful this was just me.
