We finally received this title here in Australia and I had a "QT3" session with it last night.

An amazing flight-sim but I expected nothing less having played them demo. The sim runs really well on my old Celeron 850/TNT2U workhorse and framerate has really improved a lot since the demo.

The sim has so many outstanding features and details - you can tell the designer has put a lot of loving craftsmanship into the game. Great sim - highly recommended.

For me, IL2 had the best "Hey cool!" moment for any flight sim when I was sitting on the runway, fired my guns, and watched the recoil push me backwards.

Does anyone know why the gunsight on the Me-109 is off to the side in the demo? That plane is so much better with the auxillary cannons.

So, I'm playing the demo, and I can't get off the blasted ground. As soon as the engine gets up to speed, I immediately begin tooling off the right into a fuel depot. The joysticks working, as I can see the nifty in-game stick move. What the hell is going on here?

You might want to use some left or right rudder Jason. J Use the , . / keys.

Doesn't do squat. I'm sure I'm missing some configuration of the airelons, or the some other godforsaken thing. Screw this, I'm playing Tie Fighter.

May I suggest Crimson Skies?

Man, I would LOVE to play an upgraded Crimson Skies on the Xbox. That would rock. Perfect platform for that game.

I doubt I'll be able to tear myself away from Tie Fighter, actually. The new sidewinder drivers have super-cool dead zone configuration, so I can actually play.

Well I don't know what to say Jason. When I start moving down the runway if I am veering left I use some right rudder by pressing the . (dot) key. When I am veering right I use some left rudder by pressing the , (comma). To centre the rudder I use the / (slash) key.

Go to F3 external view and check yourself.

Are you just slamming the throttle wide open? If so, even full rudder won't help you, though you could probably try tapping the brakes (or toe brakes if that's an option). You need to take the throttle up very slowly, or just turn off the torque effects option. Using Z and X for the rudder will give you a more immediate effect too.

A nice thing about IL2 is you can almost make it into Crimson Skies by turning all of the realism stuff off.

there is a really good tutorial on how to take off, but the trick to taking off is this.
1. apply breaks. use F/V to set flaps to takeoff.
2. start engine. at this point the plane wants to spin. its due to the torque the engine is applying. counter with the rudder.
3. set your trim. ctrl-up/down. you want the plane to head naturally up, so you don't have to yanl back on the stick very hard.
4. release the break, but continue to use the rudder. i suggest using Z/X. thats max rudder and works better then the regular rudder.
5. your plane should start to rise naturally. as it does use the left/right to stay straight. pull back a little.
6. retratct landing gear
7. at around 30, hit F/V to set flaps to raised.

your flying! or you can hit A and autopilot will work.
i hope this helps.

It's wierd, I'm gladly spend an hour screwing around with application compatability hacks to get Tie Fighter running under 2k, but I don't want to spend 5 minutes learning how to fly a plane.

Thanks anyway.

no prob. it just depends on what you like. i really like the feeling that i am in wwii - minus danger - and this game is the first for me to capture that feeling. i tried battle of britain and that did not entice me. its the same reason i really like operation flashpoint. its the feeling of really being there. you like feeling like a puppet for emperor palpatine...:) just kidding. tie fighter was really good, but my windows version would go crazy every so often, and i couldn't find a patch. so i gave up.:(
