I'm wet with anticipation! YAY! I need a condom!

"YAY! I need a condom!"

Not if you spend your nights playing Wizardry.

I got the game, its awesome. So far, its better than Wizards and Warriors and I liked WW alot! I've already used my condomn many times on the Wiz 8 box alone! Surprising that they can keep the main Wizardry gameplay with a pretty nice 3d engine... imagine might and magic with the strategy of a Jagged Alliance... thats Wizardry 8 so far for me. Very good.

etc

I must say I was a lot more impressed with the demo than I thought I would be (given that it's been in development for a VERY long time, and, based on the tweetings of some pretty well-placed birdies I know, definitely not a happy story in development). I'm thinking about picking the game up when I have the chance (and when I've worked through some of my huge backlog of games) -- I'd be curious to hear your impressions after some further play.

My mind boggles, though, at the people who still have their saved games from Wiz6->7...one for EACH POSSIBLE SET OF ENDINGS AND BEGINNINGS. How do these people have the time...?!

Well I made it to Arnika the first town after the first dungeon... char levels arnd 6-7 and with one rogue NPC.

Basically if you played Wizardry 7, its a similar game with a better interface, MUCH better graphics and more strategy. One thing great about the game is that each battle seems to be a challenge... something lacking in Wizards and Warriors. The way the skills do searching automatically is great and the vast number of character combinations also make it great.

I play the game in 1200 res on a v5 1.2 gig amd and the game runs like butter. Especially the reflections on the floors make it very very cool.
I know im still early in the game but i'm dreading when it ends... this is one of those crpgs you just dont want to finish... at least for now. I felt little of wanting to spend more time in the Bioware games, only because combat got too easy, and exploration and immersion were... low (except for the nice character dialogue)... anyway, with Wizardry 8 its like a suprise game... after playing the demo i was highly geeked for the game. I never expected to be as good as it is.

Also, this game is highly polished. So far havent had any problems. Its Wizards and WArriors without the bugs (which didnt bother me) and with MUCH more strategy and better graphics support. A;so the blend of sci-fi and fantasy doesnt destroy immersion. Thers a certain feel to the Wizardry games (especially the DW bradley ones) and Wizardry 8 adheres to it.

great game so far is all i can say again and again. This game is to crpgs what Jagged Alliance did for Squad based strategy games.... awesome.

etc

The condom thing is really whacked. Snap out of it mtkafka. Even if you were so aroused by a game that you were prepared to have intercourse with it, would you really need protection? You can't get it pregnant, and I doubt there would be an STD issue. Perhaps protection from a paper cut maybe?

If you got a game pregnant, would it give birth to an mission pack, a mod, or a sequel?

Could one catch bugs from having intercourse with Ultima IX?

It's sad that this is the end of the series... Wizardry being the seminal RPG (perhaps not the best choice of words given the discussion above) on personal computers...

Hell, we just to go over our science teacher's house ("Otto") in 11th grade (1981) to play Wizardry game on his Apple II. "It's 3D D&D! Look how realistic the hallways are!"

I hope that, despite SirTech's demise, someone else picks up the line and continues the tradition...

And where's Temple of Apshai 3D, anyway?

>Wizardry being the seminal RPG

Bah. Ultima series. Oops, that's gone too.

Might and Magic is still kicking, at least, although that series is more than a half decade younger. All the old series are dead now: Apshai, Bard's Tale, Wizardry, Ultima (not to mention the lesser series like Phantasie, Wizard's Crown, Shard of Spring, Questron..)

The "Vinnie's Tomb" franchise is still under development, however.

Give 'em a shot if you haven't already.

Well, I've shelved this game for the foreseeable future. On an Athlon 1400, with the in-game speed options turned all the way up, I spend about half my time playing and the other half watching a dozen monsters shuffle around the map. Gah.

Posting on the official board over on ign gets "why, I just a read a book while I'm playing!" responses. I hate Everquest's goddamn influence on gaming expectations.

Wasn't I just complaining about this in the DAOC thread?

Hmm. I just checked, and I didn't post the exact phrase I used in another e-mail to a gaming mailing list: "Aaargh! I can't take the tedium! I just can't! Waiting for 16 fire ants to
reposition themselves in combat is the computer game equivalent of chinese
water torture!"

If you've played Dungeon Master in 1989, you've pretty much played 'em all at this point.

It didn't bother me for a while, oddly, but now I can't bear to start it up. Surreal.

Heh. You can say the same thing about Wolf 3D and shooters.

Except Wolf3D had no Z axis, nothing other than right angles in the levels, and you couldn't aim up or down. And the enemies were bitmaps. There were also no physics.

So.. no. You can't say the same thing about Wolf3d and shooters. RTCW uses substantially different gameplay mechanics than Wolf3D did, and it's all about better use of the third dimension.

Contrast with RPGs which make only cursory use of 3D, to the point that you really could replace everything with an overhead 2D view and get the exact same gameplay experience.

Neither did Dungeon Master, and Wizardry 8 does.

Same with Dungeon Master, unlike Wizardry 8

Same with Dungeon Master, unlike Wizardry 8.

Sure you can, since everything you mentioned is equally applicable in a comparison between Dungeon Master/Wizardry 8. And Wizardry 8 ain't exactly state of the art for RPGs either.

Okay so now I'm curious; what exactly *is* the state of the art for cRPGs?
