Can anyone out there think of some good driving music? I was driving from Pittsburgh to Union, New Jersey last week, and I was listening to that new New Order song, called Crystal. It rocks! Its got that perfect beat for driving-- thumping base and fast pace guitars. Made the drive go a lot faster!

Anyone know of some others?

new order? man........ i haven't heard that name in a LOOOOONG time .......they had a good tune called lets run or lets go or something........ it was on a movie sountrack i think........anyway, it was good.

Hmmmm. How about Coal Chamber. These guys are nice. They do a copy of "the roof is on fire, we don't need no water let the motherfu*** burn, burn mother fu*** burn!!" They have 2 albums out and are hard as hell. =)

Well, the CD that tends to get stuck in my player and left there is called "Got Jack Black If You Want It" by, not too shockingly, Jack Black. This is a live rave-up recording done at CBGBs by a neo-rockabilly musclecar band. It's definitely not New Order, which I also like, but it's natural driving music. The only problem is that it makes my foot sink down on the accellerator before I know it...

Other bands I listen to while driving, and need to stay awake, include a southern-fried progressive band called Used Carlotta, a group from Richmond VA, whose CD "Wasted Words" just never gets old.

In a totally different realm is the band Lokomotiv out of Norway. Very much reminds me of XTC mixed with Jesus Jones, even some Pink Floyd, but the lyrics are very odd as this guy is clearly a thoughtful poet who's just mastering English. They've got several CDs out over there but I've been playing an untitled demo my brother, he runs a small studio, got for me lately. You can order from their site. In fact all these CDs might not even exist in local outlets.

Jesus Jones and New Order, wow that takes me back some, and XTC are even older. I loved XTC's Senses Working Overtime, that takes me way back to when I was only a small child on some school trip to North Wales or somewhere. Jesus Jones were a bit of a one-hit-wonder, but New Order just seem to keep going and going.

I always like to listen to NPR on long drives. I don't listen to it (or the radio in general) regularly, but on a long drive, I tend to really get into whatever the hell they're talking about. And then some bozo comes on and I start screaming at the radio as if he can hear me, which is fun. =) Plus, when you start to drive too far and lose a station, you can always find NPR in the new area.

It really makes the time fly. Well, as much as it can on long drives.

NPR is great. It's just about the only radio I listen to these days - for All Things Considered and Morning Edition mainly. I will be getting the new XM radio satellite service in a week or so. That'll be good for cross country because you won't have to fish for fading stations and there's over 100 or so to chose from including talk and news.

I used to listen to Rage Against the Machine, Slayer and Pantera when driving but I would get too pumped up and would drive very aggressive (tailgating, cutting peeps off the road, throwing iced tea bottles at cars, etc...) so I don't listen to aggressive music anymore =(

40+ hours of audio on two CDs. I carry three mix CDs and one CD-RW packed full of NPR stuff like Car Talk, All Things Considered, and Fresh Air.

As for the music, depends on the mood... Older rock for top-down driving around twisty roads, funny stuff like Tenacious D and Weird Al when I'm stuck in traffic and trying not to get homocidal. And way, way too many 80's mixes.

How do you get all that talk radio stuff onto a CD? How are you recording off of realaudio?

I like to run people off highways while listing to heavy metal!!! I will spit on there cars and throw soda bottles at there windshield!!! Hellyaaaaaaa =()

I use an app called TotalRecorder. You can record RealAudio and Audible.com streams and save them as MP3.

William Orbit's "Strange Cargo III" is a good driving cd.

I'm also partial to the "Magnolia" soundtrack.

But I'm a hack. If you really want some advice on good driving music, you have to ask Cain.

IMO, the soundtrack to "Interstate 76" has some of the best driving music around. :)

True! Also like the wierd country of Outlaws. But what kind of freaks would listen to computer game soundtracks? ;)

Oh, not me, that's for sure. I had a "friend" tell me that the Mechwarrior II soundtrack was also great to drive to. ;)
