I just checked out the Gamespot movie with Taylor showing 4 minutes of gameplay. It looks really, really nice. It looks like the game I wish to God Anarchy Online was, meaning no autocombat and a seemless world. All the friendly controls and details seem very promising also. Of course it was a cute little movie like this that suckered me into buying AO at all.

The gameplay's accurately reflected in that movie per my E3 experience with the game. I think Dungeon Seige is a safe bet.

Oh Dave, that is so obnoxious. I'll try and "receive" this sort of anal nitpicking with grace, but it is annoying.

So you believe that proper spelling is unimportant, then?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message  By Willowby on Wednesday, August 15, 2001 - 09:37 am:

It's a friggin typo. Get lives.

A typo is an accidental error. The persistent repetition of the mistake would appear to indicate another cause.

Here's where we start to make the "Rouge Spear" jokes again.

"The persistent repetition of the mistake would appear to indicate another cause."

And your persistence in pursuing this ad nauseum would appear to indicate that you are an asshole.

You are easily nauseated. I recommend Gravol.

I'd rather attack the problem at the source.

Yes. I want to date Tori Spelling, NOT Aaron Spelling.

I'd rather date Shannen Doherty. I use the word "date" loosely.

Don't even get me started on how many times I have typed "Steel Breasts" instead of "Steel Beasts".

It must be a psychological thing .....

If Dungeon Siege doesn't rock, I'll eat Tom Chick's hat. And you can quote me on that.

If you like Diablo, you should like DS. If you don't, I'd find it hard to think you'd like DS. They're very similar in feel.

One note about gameplay in DS, and relating to the 3d vs 2d thread, I will be very disappointed if you can't knock people off the bridges into the pretty chasms they keep advertising. It seems like 80% of the screenshots released so far feature the player's party fighting their way over a bridge with a bottomless chasm below it. In the recent interview, the designer makes specific comment about how their graphics engine can do these great elevation changes. Well thats all fine and good as long as I can smash someone with my morningstar and watch them pitch over backwards into the chasm. If you can't, then you might as well have done the whole game in 2d for all the 3d does for the gameplay.

Well, the 3D allows you to zoom, rotate, and tilt the camera, as well as allow 3D physics and objects in the game, like the arrows that stick in the monsters. I haven't heard about being able to knock monsters into chasms though.

"I will be very disappointed if you can't knock people off the bridges"

This made me think about Double Dragon.

I think Taylor read my post today, and said, "Shit! Nobody can fall off the bridges! That's it, call the publisher, we're not going gold until everyone can fall into the chasm. Tell'em the release date is 2002."

I'm so disappointed it will be delayed, but it will be worth it, if you can hit someone with your knock-back attack and see them hurtle, screaming, towards their doom.

They better add some juicy stuff... i hate delays. I hate em more than everybody. They just suck. But yeah, if they add falling into the chasm attacks... maybe ill be ok.

etc

You hate delays? What other consumer products do you anticipate months before they arrive? Movies?

Games are so weird this way.

So, Kafka -- do you prefer buggy games?

It sucks that we can't have both, but...c'est la vie!

Okay, okay... I'm sure Taylor knows what hes doing. I mean he is the guy that made the fabulous TA. No biggie... i was just venting my frustration.

I dont prefer buggy games of course... but i do prefer games that are hyped to come out on time! Oh well, it doesnt look to be a bug issue, reading on the DS boards and stuff it looks like a combination of balancing and perhaps a few features redone/added.

etc

There are instances when I'd agree with you. And, when they take YEARS to develop, you'd think that they could get everything done in that time span. On the other hand -- there's so much that goes on in the course of making a good game, that you can hardly blame them for miscalculating the release date. Really, I think most of the time they do pretty well.

And when it's a company with a reputation for quality -- I don't mind it a bit. It's frustrating, sure, when you're really waiting for it (like I am with Warcraft III) -- but in the end, it's usually worth it. As I said in another thread: Another six months could have made a world of difference with U9. It could have been such a great game! If only they had delayed its release to finish it up.

If Chris Taylor says it's not ready, then I'm ready to wait. I got 150% confidence in this guy after TA. Plus, when TA first came out, I had just gotten hooked up to the internet (AOL, we all start someplace). I had a suggestion for TA, so I got all my gumption together and sent him an email with the idea. He actually wrote me back. I couldn't believe it. I'll never forget that gesture, it opened my eyes to the power of the internet. Here I was, talking to the guy who made this game that I idolized. I won't say it changed my life, but it DID influence me.

Actually, I'm hoping DS lights a fire under Blizzard's ass, and makes them push the envelope for Diablo 3. Of course, TA didn't really light a fire under Westwood's ass, did it? Oh well, one can always hope...

Actually it looks like the delay is mainly because of bugs and tuning (balancing).

Taylor quote:

"we have to play the game with one character all the way through to the end, and then with another skill, and then with two, and then with all eight... mixing and matching the combinations making sure that we cover most of the cases to our satisfaction"

The success of DS, imo, depends alot on its first impression which leads to word of mouth and whatnut...and sales. Maybe a public beta the size of Diablo 2 would be a good thing.

Anyway, you can still get Arcanum next week! It won't be delayed for sure!
